Star Wars: The Old Republic – Two New Trailers to Get You Excited

Bioware and EA have released two new trailers showcasing the games companion characters and the combat of the game. Two of the most interesting things about companions is that you can customize them and even have romances with them.

Trailer #1 – Companion Characters

Trailer #2 – Combat Trailer

About Star Wars: The Old Republic

The action takes place thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader, when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divided the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players’ actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat. Star Wars: The Old Republic will be launched on December 20th in North America and December 22nd in Europe.

The combat video isn’t anything new. I know they are talking like it is – but honestly I’ve seen this type of combat in many, many MMOs. I don’t consider it a plus or a minus, it is what it is.

However – The Companion video? Did you see the Jawa with a BIG FREAKING GUN at 5:58!? That is AWESOME. I mean….Wow. I echo the guy, I want like a plushie of that character, with weapons. Or at least an action figure. I’ve always wanted more Jawas in the SW universe…

Yeah Blizz is AWESOME! Bioware needs to hurry up and send me a damn beta invite already. Hell I’ve been covering this game for AS since it was announced way back when and they even blurbed my coverage on their site. That should give me an early in. LOL!

I have a pretty good idea of the game just from the 3 years of coverage. It’s a WOW/MMOish type Themepark MMO with an emphasis on Bioware style storytelling. People will either love it or hate it, I think. I’ve read alot of beta testers reviewers and that seems to be the case. It isn’t like the FFXIV beta, though. People pretty much universally panned that game. I have the SWTOR CE preordered – It better not suck, heh. I don’t think it will though.

It won’t suck for those of you who really enjoy hardcore story elements, cut scenes, and all that. Like Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. If that kind of game play is your thing, you’ll enjoy TOR I’m sure.

I just hope that it’s a good GAME. For me it doesn’t give me the “oohs” and “aahs” just because it’s Star Wars (of which I’m in a very small minority to be sure – and yes, I am a HUGE Star Wars fan)… if the game itself isn’t all that great, being Star Wars isn’t going to get past that for me.

I really WANT to like this game. But I guess we’ll have to see. So far from what I’ve seen I haven’t been all that impressed. And in all honesty, the fact that they nerfed space combat / exploration as they have is something that really, really bothers me. Like if they created STO without the ability to fly in Sector Space.

Mike, If you don’t like it it isn’t a big deal. Not everyone likes everything. I have a feeling that many of the MMOs you like, I wouldn’t. Maybe it is the writer in me but I am much more interested in story in my games. No MMO to date has really been focused on story. I’m tired of the “Read text that doesn’t mean anything and move on” type of thing. I”m totally looking forward to the Bioware brand of storytelling – the same that was evident in KOTOR 1. I can’t wait because of that. However I do realize not everyone will like that. For one I tried STO – I played it for like a week and it just did not interest me to ever continue. I’ll probably give it another shot when it goes free to play but… yeah. But I am more a Star Wars guy than Star Trek. I love the fact that the market actually can hold the load of many different types of gamers now.

Combat still looks stiff like most MMOs … I want more action-MMOs like Vindictus or Tera – they *need* real physics to show the Force well.. but it doesn’t seem they’re going that route.
