So you thought the party season was over? Well, it’s only just begun as Mario and friends are back in an all-new entertaining family board game as Mario Party 9 launches for Wii on March 11, 2012. The latest installment in the ever-popular Mario Party franchise introduces all-new game modes, battles against bosses and playable characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, making Mario Party 9 a party that everyone will want to be a part of. The latest addition to the Mario Party series encourages you to think one step ahead of your opponents to collect the most Mini Stars and defeat Bowser. Bowser and his buddies have stolen all the Mini Stars in the sky and it is up to you to achieve the ultimate goal of winning them all back, in order to become the Super Star. Party Adventure is a new board game mode which rewrites the Mario Party rule book by allowing four people to move through the board in one vehicle. Players take turns as Captain of the vehicle by hitting Dice Blocks to move the party forward, hoping to land on lucky spaces. The vehicles also help to streamline game play and keep everyone involved [...]

The mischievous Carmen Sandiego sneaks her way onto Nintendo Wii consoles today to help children (or anyone who wants to) brush up on their math skills and learn new tricks, all while embarking on a case to put a stop to the woman’s evil plans. The game, billed as an “Edutainment” title, works to teach children in the 4th and 5th grade age-range new math skills that will help them in their studies or their daily lives. Nintendo’s page for the game describes its story thusly: Bad news, detective! There’s trouble in Moscow, Russia. St Basil’s Cathedral has disintegrated! All that’s left is a giant pile of sand. The Chief wants ACME’s best agent on this case, and that means you, detective. Get to Moscow fast and find out what’s going on before any more monuments turn into giant sand castles. Carmen Sandiego is back and only you can foil her V.I.L.E plans. Travel the globe, solve brain-twisting math puzzles, and catch the villain behind the Crumbling Cathedral. Crack the case of the Crumbling Cathedral in single-player Story Mode. Perfect your math skills in single-player Practice Mode. Challenge your friends and family to solve math puzzles against the clock in [...]

Whether they were on the go or at home, whether they played in 2D on the TV or in glasses-free 3D in their hands, gamers of all ages celebrated the holidays with Mario and Zelda. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS system not only became the fastest-selling titles in the history of their respective franchises when they launched, but they are now also the first Nintendo 3DS titles to sell 1 million units each in the United States. On the console side, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also broke launch records, became the 45th Wii title to sell more than 1 million units in the United States. “One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party [...]

TITLE: “Monster World IV” GENRE: Action/Platformer/RPG PLATFORM: Sega Mega Drive (Japan-only, 1994), PlayStation Network (2011), XBox Live Arcade (2011), and Wii Virtual Console (2011). RATING: Everyone ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1994 (Japan) “Monster World IV” is the final game released in the Monster World series and, by extension, the related Wonder Boy series. It was originally released for the Japanese Mega Drive in April of 1994 and though it was fan-translated over the years for the enjoyment of the emulation community, the game didn’t see an official release or official translation beyond Japan until it was released this year for the PlayStation Network, Wii Virtual Console, and the XBox Live Arcade. As noted, “Monster World IV” does not bear the name of its parent series Wonder Boy, and there are a couple reasons for this. First, the game stars a female protagonist unlike the other games that starred a titular “Wonder Boy.” The main reason, however, is that the Wonder Boy games also draw somewhat from two arcade games whereas those bearing the title of Monster World (or Monster Land) were designed with a console audience in mind. The game maintains the whimsical, hand-drawn graphical style that was used [...]

Last Night on G4’s “X-Play,” the most watched video game series on television, hosts Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb and Blair Herter handed out G4’s “X-Play Best of 2011 Awards.” In a season chalk-full of shooters, sequels and sci-fi epics, Bethesda’s fantasy role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, was given the top nod of Game of the Year, joining the ranks of previous winners including Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, and Fable II. “Winning an award like this is amazing,” said Todd Howard, Game Director for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . “It has been a bit of a blur. When you finish a project of this size, for the whole team, we’ve been heads down pouring ourselves into this game for three years and then you’re just kind of relieved and excited to be done.” Valve Studio’s critically-acclaimed strategy game Portal 2 received the most awards in the field with four, including Best Puzzle Game and Best Writing. Batman: Arkham City claimed three awards including Best Adventure Game, and in what can easily be regarded as the most competitive category, Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 was named Best Shooter. “This is huge for us especially considering the [...]
