We are rapidly approaching Star Trek Online’s second anniversary on February 2nd, 2012. To celebrate this moment in Star Trek history, we have four days of fun lined up for you. The event will run from around 10 AM PST on Thursday, February 2nd, through around the same time on Monday, February 6th. As with many STO events, Q will be the master of ceremonies. Log in each day and seek out Q at Earth Spacedock or Qo’noS, and he’ll have something unusual to do. Q is easily bored and really enjoys watching humanoids do silly things. Complete his task, and he’ll have a fun prize for you! Log in all four days to collect all the prizes. What are they? You’ll have to find out for yourselves by joining in the event. Q isn’t the only one celebrating, however. Starfleet Command is commissioning the new Odyssey class cruiser starship that weekend. Players level 5 and above should report to Engineer Kani (in front of Admiral Quinn’s office on Earth Spacedock) for a mission to take one of the new Odyssey class ships on a shakedown cruise. Complete the mission to receive an Odyssey class ship of your very [...]

It seems that several people have concerns about the F2P version of “Star Trek Online” that is coming down the pipe, so Cryptic’s Dan Stahl has attempted to dissuade any fears. It sounds like those that are subscribers will get additional perks for continuing to pay, but those who wish to go free-to-play won’t really suffer too much from it all. As to how this will play out with purchased materials from the past, as well as character builds? Only time will tell, though it looks like they may follow a model similar to that which they employed with “Champions Online.” For more detailed information, give this article over at Joystiq a quick read-over!
When Cryptic’s other major MMORPG, “Champions Online,” changed over to a free-to-play model earlier this year, people began to wonder how long it would be until “Star Trek Online” followed in its footsteps. Then, this summer, when Perfect World Entertainment picked up Cryptic Studios it only seemed like a matter of time. Why? Because PW is known for its free-to-play games and having games that were subscription-based would go against their nature as game developers. The plan is to have STO go free-to-play by the end of 2011, but this does leave several questions that need to be answered: Will the game be entirely free-to-play or will a subscription option still remain? Will greater emphasis go into the C-Store? What about people who purchased lifetime subscriptions to the game – will they get any sort of refund? Regardless, this is likely welcome news to many who wanted to play the game but couldn’t justify a subscription for it. After all, though the game has come a long way there still are several bugs and the game, outside of role-playing, is rather bland. Yet, if the game is free, it’s hard to go totally wrong with it! Thanks for pointing this [...]

It should be no surprise to anyone reading this that the Internet creates a large-range of freedom for someone to do what they want and be whomever they want. Some say that virtual environments create an attitude that tosses aside any sort of inhibitions, perhaps because of an overwhelming since of anonymity. Others argue that people feel far less threatened online because of a lack of physical contact, and as such they feel free to explore ideas, problems with self-identity, and other notions that they might not be able to deal with sans-scrutiny in the so-called real world. The result seems to be the idea that many people are at least somewhat different in real-life than they portray themselves to be. This isn’t even about lying about something simple like one’s name or age, but rather it could be that they are far more deviant or creepy and outright different than their kind and open online personality. To illustrate this I would like to provide a story from my tenure in “Star Trek Online.” However, in the interest of protecting the identity of the individual involved (because despite what happened I can still somewhat feel for him and he has [...]

Having found the “Beyond the Screen” series of articles to be quite interesting, Warren and I talked about it for a bit and we decided that I would write this week’s article. There were many topics that could have potentially been covered under this series, but it seemed best to perhaps build off of some of my recent work elsewhere and discuss the drama that can be found in MMORPGs and other online communities and, more importantly perhaps, how this drama can quickly seep into one’s real, personal life. First, I would like to make a careful distinction. While many people like to use the term “IRL” to distinguish between stuff related to a game or community (or the Internet in general) and their outside life, I’ve always been of the opinion that such differences are slowly melting away. These days our lives are often so seamlessly tied to our online actions that the difference slowly becomes negligible. This isn’t to say they are completely one and the same, but rather it is to say that these two aspects of our lives are often extremely intertwined. Our friends and associations we make online often can become lasting friendship (and more, [...]

While talking with fellow Anjel Syndicate writer Jessica “Allahweh” Brown today, she mentioned a new Free to Play Star Trek game called “infinite Space.” I had never heard about this project before so I decided to do a little internet spelunking. Some facts popped up: The game is developed by a company called Keen Games and will be published by Gameforge, one of Europe’s larger game companies. Several Star Trek alum are involved, including Mike and Denies Okudo as well as series writer Lee Sheldon. It is set during the Dominion War, one of the cooler story arcs of the Star Trek cannon that the movies never really touched. A player actually creates an avatar and selects between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. 1 player equals 1 ship. Each player receives their own ship that progressively becomes better as the game goes on. Chris Hülsbeck will be doing the score for the game. The game is suppose to launch this summer but I am unsure if that that will happen. The summer is pretty far on and the main website is still asking for beta participants. We’ll see what happens. Below is the teaser trailer from the website. Star Trek® [...]
