Since around the release of “Guild Wars: Eye of the North” in August of 2007, fans have been speculating on the release date of the full sequel to the hit free-to-play MMORPG, “Guild Wars 2.” ArenaNet has been very clear that there is no exact release date set and that the game will simply be finished “when it’s ready.” The game was initially planned for release as early as the end of 2008, then 2009, and then sometime in 2010 or 2011. While the game obviously isn’t coming out in the next couple of weeks, there does seem to be some hope of a release in the not-too-distant future: Today, December 16, the game entered what ArenaNet is calling an ‘Internal Closed Beta.’ What this means is that rather than being a more open closed-beta, this is strictly handled via a small pool within the development studio that would essentially only possibly expand to friends and family of developers. There is a very strict NDA that has been issued as a result, so while some leaking might occur it will probably be minimal for a while. There are currently no official sign-ups for the more public closed-beta, but when we [...]

After what will be 16 months of being a free-to-play game (albeit, not on purpose), Square-Enix has announced that “Final Fantasy XIV” will finally be terminating its extended free trial period on January 6, 2012 and switching over to a subscription-based service as originally intended. The game is being heavily discounted as opposed to their original rates: $6.99 per 30-day period and an additional $2.99 per character on the registered account. However, Square-Enix notes that when “Final Fantasy XIV 2.0″ goes live (late-2012 or early-2013) the fees will increase to $9.99 plus character fees. In order to prevent accounts from being billed for the service when they might not wish to play after January 6, Square-Enix will be suspending all accounts on January 5 and requiring billing information to be submitted in order to reactivate them. Be sure to check the Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone for more up-to-date information. SOURCE: The Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone

The “World of Darkness” MMORPG has been an interesting beast, yet it is a game that fans of the table-top experience have been waiting for for some time now. It is quite rare to see a horror-themed MMORPG out in the market, and so when it was announced that CCP Games – the people behind the wildly-popular “EVE Online” – were working on just such a game, expectations were high. After a long while with no real news and only graphical mock-ups, fans of the series got some unfortunate news recently: CCP games has let go most of the folks who were assigned to work on the project and has reaffirmed a commitment to work on making “EVE Online” that much better. This comes largely in the wake of a debacle by the company to introduce a cash-shop to the game that ended up having rediculous prices and made the game border on play-to-win. The result was a significant drop in subscriptions over a period of just a couple short months, and CCP wants to focus on getting back the faith of their subscribers as they move into a new direction and work also on their PS3 project in the [...]

TITLE: “Age of Conan: Unchained” DEVELOPER: Funcom PUBLISHER: Funcom & Eidos Interactive GENRE: MMORPG PLATFORM: Microsoft Windows RATING: Mature (17+) ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: May 20, 2008 (North America) FREE-TO-PLAY RELEASE: July 1, 2011 “Age of Conan,” like many of today’s MMORPGs, has had an interesting journey. Funcom promised a very unique experience with the game, citing its combat system and very mature gaming environment as things that would set it apart from the other games on the market. The game is also set within the world of Robert E. Howard’s Conan, and therefore it has a certain appeal to fans of the story. Yet, the game received somewhat lack-luster reception upon going live, and while it had initially gathered a decent group of subscribers at launch, the numbers slowly dwindled. Perhaps, though, this is to be expected when it comes to MMORPGs. After all, these types of games develop over time and improve based on fan-reception. “Final Fantasy XIV” is a good case example of that as well. Fast-forward ahead to May of 2011 when Funcom announced that they would be adding a free-to-play variant of the game. As always, it was something that was met with mixed perception. Many [...]

TITLE: “Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes” DEVELOPER: Electronic Arts & BioWare GENRE: Action/Real-Time Strategy PLATFORM: Microsoft Windows RATING: Rating Pending STATUS: Closed Beta RELEASE WINDOW: Q4 2011 When I first got invited to participate in the Closed Beta for this game, I pretty much thought to myself: “Great, another League of Legends type game.” This isn’t to say that “League of Legends” is a bad game (it reminds me of the Gauntlet games, which I actually quite enjoy), but rather that I wasn’t sure what they intended to add to the genre. I had actually played “Warhammer Online” a while ago and though the game wasn’t bad (it was indeed steeped in lore), it certainly wasn’t the best MMORPG out there. The fact that I played it for perhaps a month at best speaks volumes in that regard. So, how does WOH stack up to other games in this genre? One thing that I immediately noticed upon entering my first online match in WOH was the fact that the game ditches the top-down perspective in favor of the 3D viewpoint used in most MMORPGs these days. This might seem insignificant to some at first glance, but to me it shows [...]

For today’s Beyond the Screen article, I thought I would focus on something that has always bothered me when it comes to gaming, especially in an online setting: having to schedule play-times or play sessions. This is something that is largely related to playing MMORPGs or role-playing campaigns (such as in MUDs, Fantasy Grounds II, etc.). It is something that I am quite sure I am not the only person who is affected by it or who possibly views it in a negative light. In the past, I’ve always enjoyed the ability to be able to play a game whenever I wanted, even an MMORPG. I liked to be able to log in at whatever random time of day it was, see who was online, and then decide if I felt like simply socializing, doing a bit of PvP, or getting some quests done. Essentially, it was neat to simply not know what was going to happen each time I logged into whatever game it was. As I began to role-play more in virtual environments I still kept this general mindset. I treated RP as I would a real-life scenario. I enjoyed logging into the game, participating in missions, going [...]
