After what will be 16 months of being a free-to-play game (albeit, not on purpose), Square-Enix has announced that “Final Fantasy XIV” will finally be terminating its extended free trial period on January 6, 2012 and switching over to a subscription-based service as originally intended. The game is being heavily discounted as opposed to their original rates: $6.99 per 30-day period and an additional $2.99 per character on the registered account. However, Square-Enix notes that when “Final Fantasy XIV 2.0″ goes live (late-2012 or early-2013) the fees will increase to $9.99 plus character fees. In order to prevent accounts from being billed for the service when they might not wish to play after January 6, Square-Enix will be suspending all accounts on January 5 and requiring billing information to be submitted in order to reactivate them. Be sure to check the Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone for more up-to-date information. SOURCE: The Final Fantasy XIV Lodestone

Square-Enix is back with yet another new trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, full of the hotness we expect from FF cinematics. The Battle in Valhalla trailer shows us just one more reason to admire the crafting that goes into their cinematic scenes. Say what you will about the gameplay lately in Final Fantasy titles (of which many have been complaining about for a while now, sometimes myself included) but there is something to be said for the mini movies they inject into the games. Now then, sit back and enjoy this new shiny for Final Fantasy XIII-2! Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for release on January 31st, 2012 for PS3 and XBOX 360!

It looks like the long, strange trip of the Final Fantasy XIV development is taking another turn for the weird. Square Enix has decided that the game is in good enough shape to start subscriptions up again in late November or early December. I am not so sure, but hopefully they will get enough people interested to keep the game going. However FFXIV will be facing some stiff competition from the likes of Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, Otherland, The Secret World and other MMOs that will be launching in within the next year. Here are some words from Yoichi Wada, CEO of Square: Allow me to thank you all for your continued interest in FINAL FANTASY XIV. One year has passed since the game’s release, and despite the disappointment surrounding its launch, we have received a wealth of support from you, the players. Your encouraging words and continued loyalty have been a source of immeasurable inspiration to everyone involved with FINAL FANTASY XIV’s development. In the ten months since the FINAL FANTASY XIV team’s restructuring, we have put forth the utmost effort into not only improving the game’s existing features, but also creating a concrete plan to [...]

In 1996, some members of the press had the opportunity to snag a copy of an interesting disc called “Square’s Preview Extra: Final Fantasy VII & Siggraph ’95 Works.” The disc was only for the Japanese PlayStation, yet it featured what would later become a very interesting piece of gaming history. The most noteworthy items on the disc were a sample of “Final Fantasy VII” from early-1996 and the famed CGI demo of a once-planned “Final Fantasy VI” remake. “Final Fantasy VII” did not see a release until January of 1997, so the demo from “Square’s Preview Extra” disc contains some content that is not found in the final game. The demo consists of the party’s first major adventure in Midgar. One of the most interesting things about the demo though is the fact that Aerith is in your starting party. There are several possibilities for why this may be the case, though some argue that it was just an Easter Egg for the demo in order to complete the party. However, at the time the demo was most likely prepared, the character of Tifa did not yet exist. Instead, Aerith was supposed to double as “Cloud’s childhood friend from [...]

TITLE: “Final Fantasy IV” LICENSOR: NONE. DEVELOPER: Shenzhen Nanjin PUBLISHER: Shenzhen Nanjin GENRE: RPG PLATFORM: Famicom RELEASE YEAR: 2010 As mentioned in last week’s article, independent Chinese software developers have kept what we would consider ‘legacy consoles’ alive and well over the years. Despite the fact that the Famicom is nearly 30-years-old, every year a slew of new original games, ports of classics or modern games, and multicarts hits the market. Of course, the Chinese are not susceptible to the copyright laws present in the West, and even if they were, no real effort is made to enforce them. Earlier this year I did some business on the Chinese auction site “TaoBao” and managed to obtain a copy of an 8-bit port (or demake, as some call it) of “Final Fantasy IV,” among other games. While it is true that “Final Fantasy IV” was originally conceived as an 8-bit title when in early development around 1990, the game was taken back to the drawing-board and revamped to fit with Nintendo’s new 16-bit console. This explains why many of the graphics in the game retain an 8-bit look, but have a higher level of color detail. This, of course, has little [...]

A little over two weeks ago, some of you may recall that I wrote an article about how some major landmarks from various “Final Fantasy” games were being reproduced with loving care in “MineCraft.” Well, not long after I posted that initial article, I received a follow-up comment from Sir Beret pointing me to his project. Beret worked hard to reproduce the locations in the starting area of the original “Final Fantasy” for the NES (Cornelia Castle Town and the surrounding areas). While Beret defines the game as more of a ‘recreational map,’ it does feature two hidden areas that go deep underground. While he will not say directly how you can access them, he simply says that you should poke around town in order to discover them. Fun, don’t you think? Beret’s project is posted at Planet Minecraft, so if you’d like to read more about it or download the map data, head on over to his thread!
It always amazes me what people have managed to do with “Minecraft,” and this is no exception. Apparently, someone has set out to recreate some of the major locations from various “Final Fantasy” games, in the case of the videos below, Baron Castle (FF4) and Figaro Castle (FF6). The creator even made custom texture packs to work with these locations. How impressive is that? It will be even more amazing to see what people come up with when the 1.8 “Adventure Update” goes live. To be honest, part of the reason I’ve put off work on my own Hyrule project was the knowledge of how game-changing this upcoming update will be, and the fact that it may require completely reworking the project as it exists now.
