We are rapidly approaching Star Trek Online’s second anniversary on February 2nd, 2012. To celebrate this moment in Star Trek history, we have four days of fun lined up for you. The event will run from around 10 AM PST on Thursday, February 2nd, through around the same time on Monday, February 6th. As with many STO events, Q will be the master of ceremonies. Log in each day and seek out Q at Earth Spacedock or Qo’noS, and he’ll have something unusual to do. Q is easily bored and really enjoys watching humanoids do silly things. Complete his task, and he’ll have a fun prize for you! Log in all four days to collect all the prizes. What are they? You’ll have to find out for yourselves by joining in the event. Q isn’t the only one celebrating, however. Starfleet Command is commissioning the new Odyssey class cruiser starship that weekend. Players level 5 and above should report to Engineer Kani (in front of Admiral Quinn’s office on Earth Spacedock) for a mission to take one of the new Odyssey class ships on a shakedown cruise. Complete the mission to receive an Odyssey class ship of your very [...]

Perfect World Entertainment Inc., a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Perfect World Co., Ltd., and Cryptic Studios, Inc., an acclaimed MMORPG developer, along with CBS Consumer Products, today announced the launch and immediate availability of the highly anticipated Star Trek Online Free-to-Play. “We couldn’t be more excited,” said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios, Inc. “Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away. Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There’s no better way to see how sitting in the captain’s chair feels.” With the launch of Star Trek Online free-to-play, anyone can download and play the game for free without a retail copy or subscription. All players may enjoy Star Trek Online’s many features for free. Players do, however, have the ability to access additional optional features through a virtual store. In Star Trek Online, the Star Trek universe truly comes to life on a massive scale. Players captain their own starships as part of the Federation or Klingon Empire in a persistent online universe, journey to strange new worlds and take part in epic ground and space missions.
Cryptic’s Dungeons and Dragons co-op RPG Neverwinter is changing dramatically under new publisher Perfect World. For starters, it’s now a free-to-play MMO title. Neverwinter is shifting from the co-operative multiplayer game that was announced last year and into full-fledged, free-to-play MMO. The game will utilize the 4th Edition D & D Ruleset, with a more action setting. The developer says Neverwinter will be closer to a game like Nexon’s Vindictus, where combat is controlled by mouse clicks, and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully slaughtering hordes of monsters. It utilizes a modified version of the engine from Cryptic’s other MMOs, Star Trek Online and Champions Online. Not only will the base game be free, but so will the content packs released after launch. Cryptic and Perfect World are opting to make their money through microtransactions. Players will have the option of purchasing consumables, vanity pets, and cosmetic items for real money. Unlike the current trend of ex-subscription-based MMOs that lock out portions of their content to free players, Cryptic plans to avoid making any content premium-only in Neverwinter. No playable classes, races, or specific game content has been announced, nor has the confirmation as to whether [...]

It seems that several people have concerns about the F2P version of “Star Trek Online” that is coming down the pipe, so Cryptic’s Dan Stahl has attempted to dissuade any fears. It sounds like those that are subscribers will get additional perks for continuing to pay, but those who wish to go free-to-play won’t really suffer too much from it all. As to how this will play out with purchased materials from the past, as well as character builds? Only time will tell, though it looks like they may follow a model similar to that which they employed with “Champions Online.” For more detailed information, give this article over at Joystiq a quick read-over!
When Cryptic’s other major MMORPG, “Champions Online,” changed over to a free-to-play model earlier this year, people began to wonder how long it would be until “Star Trek Online” followed in its footsteps. Then, this summer, when Perfect World Entertainment picked up Cryptic Studios it only seemed like a matter of time. Why? Because PW is known for its free-to-play games and having games that were subscription-based would go against their nature as game developers. The plan is to have STO go free-to-play by the end of 2011, but this does leave several questions that need to be answered: Will the game be entirely free-to-play or will a subscription option still remain? Will greater emphasis go into the C-Store? What about people who purchased lifetime subscriptions to the game – will they get any sort of refund? Regardless, this is likely welcome news to many who wanted to play the game but couldn’t justify a subscription for it. After all, though the game has come a long way there still are several bugs and the game, outside of role-playing, is rather bland. Yet, if the game is free, it’s hard to go totally wrong with it! Thanks for pointing this [...]

It should be no surprise to anyone reading this that the Internet creates a large-range of freedom for someone to do what they want and be whomever they want. Some say that virtual environments create an attitude that tosses aside any sort of inhibitions, perhaps because of an overwhelming since of anonymity. Others argue that people feel far less threatened online because of a lack of physical contact, and as such they feel free to explore ideas, problems with self-identity, and other notions that they might not be able to deal with sans-scrutiny in the so-called real world. The result seems to be the idea that many people are at least somewhat different in real-life than they portray themselves to be. This isn’t even about lying about something simple like one’s name or age, but rather it could be that they are far more deviant or creepy and outright different than their kind and open online personality. To illustrate this I would like to provide a story from my tenure in “Star Trek Online.” However, in the interest of protecting the identity of the individual involved (because despite what happened I can still somewhat feel for him and he has [...]

As someone that really loves Role Playing Games (RPGs) I have been looking forward to the next iteration of the Neverwinter Nights series. I’ve played both Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2, both great games in their own right. Cryptic, the studio behind City of Heroes, Star Trek Online and Champions Online is behind the new version of Neverwinter. The studio stresses that this is not Neverwinter Nights but a whole new take on the existing formula. There isn’t much known about the game at the moment but there are some facts that are starting to come to light. About 100 years have passed since the previous game. So Cryptic at least references previous events. The combat will be in real time with no pausing. This is different from the previous 2 installments and makes sense for an online game. It is an online only game but not exactly an MMO. The way Neverwinter is described reminds me more of Guild Wars than a traditoinal MMO – Hub Cities with instanced quests. Cryptic is aiming to have five classes available at launch: Wizard, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger and Cleric. This doesn’t mean they won’t have more classes available in the future. It is a game aimed at [...]
