A few months later, in the wake of concerns over his health, he said via Twitter “I’m progressing well”.
A talented programmer, Iwata first joined Nintendo’s HAL Laboratory in the 1980s, where he worked on games like Balloon Fight and EarthBound. He became a Director of the company in 2000, and in 2002 was appointed as only the fourth President of Nintendo when he succeeded Hiroshi Yamauchi.
In his time as President, Iwata oversaw some of the strongest (Wii, DS) and weakest (GameCube, Wii U) periods in Nintendo’s history as a video game company. In recent times, he developed a huge fan base and following as the host of the Nintendo Direct programs.
Iwata was not one to fear change and his most recent decision to take Nintendo into a partnership with mobile game developer/publisher DeNA would be his last. Only time will tell how this decision will affect Nintendo, but it may be one of the smartest moves he could make and could be also be a lasting legacy to his name.
Career Record :
- June 2000 Appointed as Director
- May 2002 Appointed as President – Appointed as Representative Director
- June 2013 Appointed as CEO of Nintendo of America Inc.
As a result, the following two Representative Directors remain at the company. Genyo Takeda (Representative Director; Senior Managing Director) Shigeru Miyamoto (Representative Director; Senior Managing Director). At this time no one knows who will take over the now vacant position as CEO.
As an immensely monumental figure within the industry and among Nintendo fans, his presence will be missed! RIP Mr. Iwata and on behalf of the staff at Anjel Syndicate our hearts and prayers go out to your family.
