B-PROJECT is an original anime work and can be found streaming on Crunchyroll, Saturdays at 10:00 AM PDT/12:00 PM CDT/1:00 PM EDT.
So as the episode started I was seemingly overwhelmed by how gorgeous each of the 10 male idols were and how good the music actually is. Going into this episode I was expecting an UtaPri clone and something to tide me over until S3 of UtaPri airs this Autumn.
Boy was I wrong! Yes there is a very UtaPri vibe to the show, but it has its own personality that makes this worth watching. Tsubasa is a bit of an airhead, but they quickly turn that around when she is able to find the problem with Kitakore’s new song. The story does seem to expect the viewer to overlook the fact that she has no training in music or the industry itself. She states that she is familiar with the three groups music, and used to work in a CD store. With her rookie status in the business, the series writers do take the opportunity to walk us through some of the terms and technical details of the music industry.
It was hard to get a read on all 10 of the male leads from their brief introductions, but it seems they all have very different personalities and don’t always get along with each other. The two idols in Kitakore, Tomohisa Kitakado and Ryuuji Korekuni were very likable and have great chemistry between them. The harmony in their music fits the duo well. My favorite idol as of now is Tomohisa who is voiced by my favorite anime voice actor, Daisuke Ono. All the voice actors chosen for this series are spot on and fit with the character they are voicing.
The music is surprisingly good so far, and is definitely an OST I will be interested in picking up. The animation quality was pretty impressive from the opening dance number to the fantasy sequences in Tsubasa’s mind.
I couldn’t find anything wrong with this series and will definitely be a hit with its target audience. If the series continues giving us insight into the workings of the music industry and the refinement of their music, B-Project definitely has the chance to set itself apart from it’s male idol anime predecessors.
Overall, I would definitely say if you like the music anime genre this is one to watch this season. B-Project for me is a definite must watch for me and I have high hopes that this will continue to impress me over the course of the season. I gave this episode a solid 4 out of 5!
