Kickstarter has proven to be invaluable to many in getting projects that would remain as relative unknowns to get the funding they needed in order to become big successes. While video games have certainly been a big part of this, other projects, including the Ouya, received their funding here as well. So, it’s always awesome to scroll through the site and see the neat projects going on there.
One such project that has received a lot of attention lately is the game “Wildman” that is under development from Gas Powered Games. The game is being described as the “spiritual successor” to “Dungeon Siege,” “Supreme Commander,” and “Demigod,” yet it takes various aspects from those games and puts them into a whole new experience that they believe will be evolutionary. In the game, you take the role of the “Wildman” (or “Wildwoman,” if you choose a female player-character) and you are dropped in the middle of a war-zone. It is up to you to lead your troops, fortify defenses, and crack enough skulls to drive your enemy away. Yet, battling through warzones is only part of the fun as much of the game plays out as an action/adventure RPG experience that may remind you of some games (such as “Diablo” or the Dungeon Siege games), yet it stands in its own right as a unique experience. So, the game ends up being part action/RTS and part action/adventure/RPG, and it all blends together in a seamless and fun fashion.
And to make things even more unique, should you choose a female player-character, not only does your appearance and all change in-game (as you would expect), but so too will the game’s title to “Wildwoman” and the title graphics also alter appropriately. As Chris Taylor, the game’s Lead Designer, notes, no other games have really done that before.
But who are “they?”
The folks behind “Wildman” over at Gas Powered Games are industry veterans that have worked as lead designers on several big-time projects. With this latest game, they are drawing all their talents together into doing something epic. And, from everything that has been shown so far, epic is a good word to describe it all. The graphics invoke the same hand-drawn look that “Diablo III” did, the gameplay is pretty spot-on, and the music comes from Jeremy Soule, the artist behind “Skyrim,” “Morrowind,” “Oblivion,” “Icewind Dale,” and much more.
Lead Designer Chris Taylor recently sat down with the fine folks over at PC Gamer for an interview in which he explained the unique RTS and RPG elements of the game, and his three-page feature really makes for a good read for anyone wanting to know more about the impetus behind not only the game, but their desire to have it be community-funded.
